How to get to Thailand – air
The name of the biggest Bangkok Airport is Suvarnabhumi (read “su-wan-na-poom”). It was chosen by HM King Bhumibol Adulyadej and means “The Golden Land”. “Golden Peninsula”or “Golden Land” is a traditional name for the Thailand-Cambodia-Laos-Burma region.
There are actually two airports in Bangkok. Suvarnabhumi is the new one. It was opened in September 2006. Based on photos I would say that it´s architects Murphy/Jahn have done a good job. It seems to be spacious and you get immediately a strong feeling of opening and brightness. Official site of the Airport proclaims a long term plans regarding growing capacity. Nowadays it is 45 million passengers and 3 million tonnes of cargo per year and in the future it should be up to 100 million passengers and 6.4 million tonnes of cargo a year. Which is quite courageous if you compare it with Heathrow terminal capacity to 90 million passengers a year.
The airport is situated in Racha Thewa in the Bang Phli district of Samut Prakan province, 30 kilometers east of Bangkok.
